Mike Noblet, Local Candidate Coach
Local Candidate Coach, Mike Noblet, possesses a wealth of direct experience running for office and managing campaigns. Mike rocketed out the gate in his mid-20s, winning the Democratic primary for state representative in Houston, Texas. More recently he was elected twice to a city council and then later, was chosen mayor of a mid-sized suburban city near Seattle, Washington. The intervening years saw him managing a regional campaign for presidential candidate George McGovern as well as leading bond campaigns to pass tax increases for drainage district improvements, purchases of park lands, and construction of a police station and emergency command center. And recently, Mike has coached local district candidates ways to win their campaigns.
Mike Runs for First Time
Mike ran for public office for the first time as a candidate for an open seat in a newly formed single-member state representative district in Houston, Texas. As one of six candidates in the primary, he was predicted to win no more than three or four percent of the vote. Through persistence, determination, and the help of dedicated volunteers, Mike won 27 percent. Then in the resulting runoff election, he won a 51 percent majority.
Mike Leads Bond Campaign
Mike was later tapped by the city council in Bothell, Washington
to chair the Citizens’ 2010 Parks and Police Taskforce for selecting
sites for potential parks as well as for a new police station, emergency command center for the city. (Population then: 24,000) Next, he led a campaign to win voter approval of municipal bonds to fund park lands and the police station. Election results came in at 56 percent for parks and 52 percent for the police facility.
Mike Runs for and Wins a Seat on City Council
After his success with the bond campaign, the bug to run for Bothell City Council bit, and Mike filed for an open seat in 1993. Once it was official, he took to the streets. Armed with walking lists identifying prospective voters, he and his volunteers canvassed neighborhoods throughout Bothell. Mike also participated in candidate forums and met with endorsing committees. His campaign sent two mailings to likely voters and created neighborhood-specific handouts to distribute while block walking. Mike enjoyed favorable early coverage from the local weekly newspaper and later received its endorsement. Bothell’s firefighters and police unions followed with their endorsements as did several civic groups. In November of that year, after his campaign had spent $3,177, Mike won 3,449 votes for a winning margin of 52 to 48 percent.
Mike Wins Re-Election
When Mike ran for re-election four years later, with “Performance, Not Promises” as his slogan, his opponent was a former member of city council. Mike won the endorsements of Bothell’s police and firefighters unions along with a Very Good rating from the Municipal League of King County.
He also received the endorsement of the local weekly newspaper as well as this from the regional daily newspaper:
“. . . so what’s wrong with the current guy [Mike Noblet]? The answer is nothing."
“Mike Noblet has spent the past four years on the Bothell City Council holding the city government accountable by making it
answer pointed questions. While we’re sure city officials get tired dealing with his persistence, there is no doubt such
questioning serves the residents in the long run. While Noblet has voted to hold down tax increases, he’s aware of the needs
facing the city and flexible enough to approve more money if it must be done."
“Noblet is the councilman now and is serving the city well. Residents should keep him on the job. The Eastside Journal endorses
Noblet for Bothell City Council.”
After his campaign had spent $2,435, Mike received 5,462 votes, a landslide 58 percent margin of victory on Election Day.
Mike Voted Mayor
Mike’s fellow members of city council affirmed his inclusive leadership style by voting him mayor of Bothell, Washington. As mayor, Mike worked with council and city staff to formulate policy to be codified in city ordinances. He valued learning how citizens view issues facing their communities and gaining their approval for city policy under consideration. Mike believed that without community support, city council’s best ideas die on the vine.
