Yesterday was the Shortest Day of the Year
Yesterday was the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year for us living in northern latitudes. It happened at the same instant everywhere on Earth on Tuesday December 22nd at 04:49 Greenwich Mean Time (Universal time). We in western Washington saw only slightly less than eight and half hours of daylight yesterday with the dusk beginning before four in the afternoon. Of course, you in Alaska would love to have that much daylight.
Today, the days begin to lengthen when we gained a less than a second of daylight since yesterday. Indeed, it seems like a long haul until the summer Solstice on June 21st when we on Whidbey Island will be bathed in fifteen and half hours of sunshine. While there is hope but that hope seems ethereal at best today.
