Celebrate National Flip Flop Day

Saturday was the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year for us living in northern latitudes. It happened at the same instant everywhere on Earth north of the Equator on Sunday, December 21st at 04:49 Greenwich Mean Time (Universal time). We in western Washington saw only slightly less than eight and half hours of daylight yesterday with the dusk beginning before four in the afternoon. And last Friday, we experienced our darkest day in recorded history based on twenty years measurements of solar energy that made it through the clouds accompanying the record rainfall on that day.

Today, the days begin to lengthen when we gained a less than minute of daylight since Saturday. Indeed, it seems like a long haul for the 180 days until the Summer Solstice on June 21st when we on Whidbey Island will be bathed in fifteen and half hours of sunshine. While there is hope but that hope seems ethereal at best today.

No matter where you live in locales where the days are short and the winter weather is a frigid reality, there is the prospect that summer is on the way. Life for everyone, especially for local candidates, is all is all about positive attitude, so join with me by breaking out your flip flops to wear for a few minutes by the fire and you will find your spirits lifted. Summer is on its way!

Best wishes to you to celebrate!

Mike
